Pleasant Valley Resort

Attappadi Hills · Kerala

Experience rustic days
on the rain-swept Attappadi hills

An isometric block of the Attappadi valley, 28 km across, cut from
elevation data: forested ridges rising to the east, the Bhavani
winding through the open floor, and the resort marked near the centre.

The Attappadi valley

Wake up in the middle of it

Ridges all around, cloud on the peaks most mornings, and the nearest town a short drive down the ghat. The resort sits on the valley floor, with the Western Ghats rising on every side.

Stay

Two cottages. Four guests.

Set on a working farm. Mornings come up through the mist and the rain arrives all at once. Between the rains the nights are clear and pitch black, and in the weeks before the monsoon they fill with fireflies.

Monsoon: June to September, easing through October to December.
Fireflies: May and June.
Misty mornings: January, and June to December. To confirm.
Cool and clear: January to March, and October to December.

South-west monsoon June to September, north-east showers October to December. Fireflies peak in the weeks before the monsoon. Misty mornings run through the monsoon and into winter (dashed: to confirm). Bring light woollens for winter nights.

A note about the rain The south-west monsoon is the loud one, June to September, and it is the reason everything here is green. The north-east showers that follow are gentler and mostly fall at night.

01

Mid-May – mid-June

The fireflies

For a fortnight or so before the rain breaks, the trees along the lower path fill with them after dark. No moon is better than a full one.

The two cottages after dark, their windows lit, with firefly trails through the garden

02

June – September

The south-west monsoon

It arrives over the ridges to the west and it does not do things by halves. The valley runs with water, the areca goes black-green, and the tank fills.

03

June – December

Misty mornings

Cloud sits in the valley overnight and lifts through the palms an hour after first light. Walk the farm before breakfast and you walk inside it.

04

October – March

Cool and clear

The best months, and the reason people come twice. Low humidity, long views east over the plains, and nights cold enough for light woollens.
